ASU SenSIP – ITESM

Collaboartuve Workshops on Sensors,  Machine Learning and Communication 2016-2018

The SenSIP center at Arizona State University (ASU) and Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) have recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU)  and held two administrative meetings at ASU to explore collaborative research and education endeavors.   The leads on the collaboration described by the MOU (attached)  are  Andreas Spanias who is director of the ASU Sensor Signal and Information Processing (SenSIP) Center and NCSS I/UCRC Site and Dean Neil Hernández Gress and Dr. Cesar Vargas from ITESM .   The NSF proposal funded  two workshops whose theme will be on Sensor Signal and Information Processing systems. The workshops, which engaged USA and Mexico industry researchers, faculty and students, are  titled:

– Sensors and Signal Processing, Tempe, AZ.

Sensors and Machine Learning, Scottsdale, AZ.

The two workshops were co-organized by Dr. Spanias and Dr. Vargas.

Intellectual Merit:  The intellectual merit of this workshop development program is in establishing a focused set of activities that will meaningfully expose faculty and students in USA and Mexico to the technical challenges and opportunities in the field of sensors and signal processing.

Broader impacts: This program positively impacted US-Mexico research and education initiatives and will engage a number of qualified students and faculty from two large institutions in the area of sensors and signal processing.  The program engaged underrepresented groups within STEM disciplines such as ECE, with broader impacts on improving the engineering workforce base, with commensurate economic benefits to the two countries.  The program disseminated successful academy-industry collaborative models such as the I/UCRC in Mexico.  Several application aspects of sensors will be addressed in industrial areas including of localization, mobility with extensions to manufacturing, health, and other systems of common interest.
